Campus Information
Located in Lake County, Colorado, our campus overlooks the highest peaks in the state, Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. Denver International Airport is 2 and 1/2 hours away. We are within 6 hours of dozens of mountain ranges, canyon systems, and wilderness areas. Our backyard has an amazing array of terrain, including the Arkansas River and San Isabel National Forest.
People from around the world enjoy the historical and recreational resources found in Lake County. The city of Leadville (the highest in the nation at 10,200 ft. above sea level), 5 miles from HMI, has a rich history of hard rock mining that dates back to the mid-1800s. The 10th Mountain Division trained for World War II in the mountains surrounding Leadville.
While they are here, groups of six to twelve students live together in one of five rustic cabins. Each cabin has two bunkrooms and a small living room. Wood stoves and lanterns create a warm glow during the chilly evenings. The main building has classrooms, a library, dining hall, offices, showers and numerous places to meet and study. The highest peak in the state, Mt. Elbert, is the focal point for the spectacular view from Who’s Hall, the central meeting room in the building. The east building contains more classrooms, a climbing wall, and storage for all of our wilderness equipment. Both buildings have extensive porches and decks that serve as outdoor classrooms.
