Alumni Expeditions
We are excited to offer several opportunities for Alumni to return to HMI this year. These trips will be a chance to re-live your HMI wilderness expeditions, meet new friends, and re-connect with old ones. General Information
- You must be at least 17 years of age and an alumni of an HMI program to register for expeditions (If you have a sibling or parent who is interested in coming on the trip with you, please call us to discuss.)
- You will need to provide your own travel to HMI or to Frisco / Copper Mountain via Colorado Mountain Express (CME). We will do one CME shuttle pick up at Frisco / Copper Mountain on the day the program starts, and one drop off on the day the program ends. Call us to discuss timing of flights and shuttles.
- Gear rental is free; you will have to provide your own hiking boots (for the Pre-Reunion trips) and some personal equipment
- All meals are provided
- All programs are alcohol / tobacco / drug free
- All expeditions will be staffed by 2-3 HMI faculty & staff (with visits from others whenever possible!)
- Expeditions have limited space: Sign up early!
- We've done our best to make the costs for these trips reasonable; if you need financial assistance, please contact us.

Expedition Descriptions
Sangree's Hut Skiing Expedition
Dates: January 5-10, 2008
Tuition: $300
Location: Sangree-Froelicher Hut, 10th Mountain Division Hut System
After a day of prep, gear issue and getting used to being on skis, we will ski in approximately 4 miles to the beautiful and luxurious (by backcountry standards!) Sangree-Froelicher hut. We'll spend three nights there doing day trips and relaxing, skiing out in time for late departures on 1/10 or early departures on 1/11.
Empire Gulch Yurt Skiing Expedition
Dates: April 17-20, 2008 (Colorado College Block Break)
Tuition: $100
Location: Empire Gulch, Mosquito Range
We will ski in approximately 4 miles to the two Empire Gulch yurts, located with a stunning view of the Mosquito Range. We'll spend two nights there skiing from the yurts and hopefully getting in some spring peak descents.
Pre-Reunion Backpacking Expedition
Dates: June 1-6, 2008
Tuition: $275
Location: Sawatch or Collegiate Range
The classic HMI wilderness experience! Grab your pack and visit or re-visit some of Colorado's most beautiful mountains. We will camp and travel in good style, camping in some of your favorite sites along the way.
Pre-Reunion Climbing Expeditio
Dates: June 1-6, 2008
Tuition: $300
Location: Sangre de Cristo Range
This expedition will include both backpacking and technical climbing elements. Weather permitting, we will attempt one or more technical ascents in the Crestone Peak area of the Sangre de Cristos. Due to the challenging nature of this expedition, group size is limited to 6.
