The Founders Fund
Since its inception, HMI has thrived under the dedicated and tireless leadership of Christopher and Molly Barnes. Now a mature organization and a sought-after experience for many high school students, HMI has reached a critical point in its history. As the founders look to welcome a new Head of School to HMI for the 2013-14 school year and prepare for their next adventure beyond HMI, they are committed to longstanding vitality for the institution they created. HMI's upcoming 15th anniversary is not only cause for great celebration, but also a call to action: As HMI’s reputation continues to grow and more individuals and families are seeking access to its unparalleled educational experience, it is imperative that the school remains competitive in the educational opportunities that HMI offers, its scholarship awards, its outstanding faculty and staff, and its financial stability to weather a constantly evolving economy.
“My time at HMI shaped my high school experience, taught me to love and respect the outdoors, and endowed me with lifelong friends and mentors. I want to be a part of the effort of ensuring that the doors to HMI remain open to future students, with the hope that they, too, will be as positively impacted by their experience there as I was.” – Max, Chevy Chase, MD
Endowment Priorities
Financial Aid: As HMI’s reputation grows, the Board of Trustees remains dedicated to increasing the accessibility of our school to all students with the courage and curiosity to attend, regardless of the family's ability to pay. Endowment funds will support the school in inviting exceptional students from across the country and beyond to participate in an HMI Semester or Summer regardless of social and economic backgrounds.
Faculty and Staff Compensation: The Board of Trustees is committed to offering competitive salaries in order to attract and retain the uniquely qualified faculty and staff at HMI. HMI seeks a larger endowment to help support competitive compensation, in addition to generous professional development opportunities, to its dedicated faculty and staff.
Ongoing Capital Projects: HMI continues to run its programs from its durable and simple campus in Leadville to all corners of the Colorado Plateau. While a straightforward and rustic atmosphere encompass the HMI campus and buildings, the school is committed to a comprehensive and well-maintained infrastructure to support the efficiency, effectiveness, and relative comfort of each student experience. HMI's campaign for an endowment also includes support for regular maintenance to assure the longevity of campus facilities and infrastructure.
- As of January 2013, HMI has raised $1.6 million towards our overall goal of $2 million
