October 31st

This week, following Parents’ Weekend, we’ve had mixed feelings of nostalgia and excitement. We were very excited to see our parents and show them where we have been living for the past two months. We had a variety of on campus activities such as a bonfire, poetry readings, and a slideshow of pictures from the first half of the semester. It was an eventful weekend and reminded us that we only have two months left, so we better make the most of it!

Starting on Tuesday, we fell right back into our usual schedule of schoolwork and a lot more fun! As for academics, we have been analyzing poetry in English and meeting Honduran youth via Skype sessions in Spanish. In French we made a variety of traditional cuisine and in Math we have been learning a lot of different materials and equations.

As much as we are focused on classes, we cannot help but think about the holiday to come: Halloween! Many activities this week have been focused on making spooky decorations and adorning our dining hall and library with ghosts, gravestones and an enormous stuffed clown that hangs above the main tables. Most importantly however, we are trying to come up with costumes for the upcoming Halloween Dance this Saturday night! Each student was randomly partnered with another student and together they have to create costumes—that will surely impress.

It is hard to believe that our third and final expedition is only a week away! We received our first big snow fall this week and feel quite grateful that we will not be baring these arctic mountains, but rather we are headed to the Canyons of Utah. We know the weather there can be pretty frigid as well, but we are hoping for warmth and sunshine! Alas, let us not get too ahead of ourselves here; one week left until expedition means one full week of schoolwork, activities and fortifying our friendships here on campus. There is always something to look forward to here at HMI, but for the moment we are looking forward to being right here right now!
