Places We Visit

It was a beautiful morning. As the sun started to come up, the horizon became orange and started to glow, and you could see the outline of the mountains. I sat on some rocks, waiting for the sun to rise. It came over the mountains and lit up the tip of North Massive, so that it glowed pink. - Erica Wineland-Thomson; Watertown, Massachusetts

Our three approximately ten-day wilderness trips are scheduled at regular intervals through the semester and visit some of the most varied and awe-inspiring terrain in the United States. Expeditions travel through the Sawatch, Mosquito, San Juan, and Collegiate mountains in Colorado and the canyonlands of southeastern Utah. Hiking is the primary activity on most expeditions, with short sections of backcountry climbing or community service included on some trips. The twenty hours of community service earned during the service expedition during the fall semester can be transferred to home schools. Students travel on skis and camp in snow during the second expedition of our spring semester. We teach all spring students to telemark ski, and no prior skiing experience is necessary to complete the RMS ski expedition.
