Typical Day at the Rocky Mountain Semester

7:30: Morning exercise, today a soccer match, begins the day. Breakfast is at 8:00, and Ryer and the student cook crew have blueberry panckaes ready for you.

Morning Classes: After morning exercise, breakfast, and chores, head down to the Arkansas River with Audrey for Science Lab. For three hours, learn about stream hydrology at the headwaters of one of America’s largest rivers. Learn about stream flow, erosion, and watersheds by seeing them in action. (Students in the second section of science might be in math, language, or English class for the morning.)

12:00: Lunch is in the yurt and there is a Community Meeting. Participate in a discussion with Becca, the Spanish teacher, on leadership in a small community.

Afternoon Classes: US History class builds on the morning science lab with
a discussion about the history of water use in the West. Portray environmentalists, ranchers, or fishermen in a heated town meeting.
Community service is next. Join Karl, a math teacher, at the Leadville elementary chool to tutor 4th graders in math and science. One more class wraps up the day.

6:00: While you were tutoring 4th graders, five of your classmates made
dinner as it was their turn in the weekly cook crew rotation. Using a student recipe from home, the cook crew make's chicken and pasta with homebread bread.

7:00: Follow the nutritious, homemade meal with two hours of quiet study hall. Afterward, enjoy free time to
get in some bouldering on the climbing wall.

9:45: Head back to your cabin for time with your friends and sleep.

Weekends

Weekend free time is a chance to relax, visit town, finish homework, or invent a new game on the playing field with friends. Faculty members schedule optional or required Saturday night and Sunday activities that take advantage of the diversity of offerings in the Leadville area. Making our own fun is a hallmark of the Rocky Mountain Semester; common activities include a talent show or a visit to the local bowling alley.
