Admissions

I have only taken the long way around, only seen the amazing views, only learned how amazing people can be, and only had the best time of my life. - Andrew; Charlottesville, Virginia

Who Should Apply?

We accept up to forty-two students who are excited about working hard and playing hard, making new friends, leading class discussions, learning new skills, making dinner for tent mates, and living in the wilderness of Colorado and Utah. Young men and women in solid academic standing in their sophomore year are encouraged to apply for either the fall or spring semester of their junior year. No prior wilderness experience is necessary to participate in an HMI semester. We will also accept applications from exceptional juniors who are interested in a challenging semester during their senior year. Applications for both semesters are due (postmarked) by February 15, we will accept applications on a rolling admissions basis to fill any remaining places.

The HMI Semester is not a program for students to resolve or work on behavioral, emotional, or psychological problems. The school cannot provide appropriate support for students attempting to quit tobacco use, drug use, or alcohol use or to recover from prior substance abuse problems.

Acceptance is granted based on academic achievement, personal essays, teacher recommendations, and the student’s desire to participate in a challenging academic and wilderness program in the West.

Diversity at the High Mountain Institute

HMI strives for diversity by honoring the differences of each member of the community.  We seek to build a community (of trustees, faculty, staff, and students) that represents ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographic diversity and that brings a diversity of experience, background, talent, and perspective.
