Why do I love the High Mountain Institute?
The reasons are as varied as our students.
Watching students—both new wilderness travelers and those experienced in the outdoors —persevere, succeed, and leave here more prepared to thrive in their daily lives inspires me. While at HMI, students cross physical and intellectual boundaries that seem insurmountable, and they often do so with a smile. It never ceases to amaze me how often laughter and challenge come together here.
I find the community that develops during our programs irresistible. When individuals succeed it is in part because of the people around them. As a result, a thriving community develops that is larger than any of our individual efforts.
Another reason to appreciate this school is our alumni. These men and women tell us that they have been accepted to colleges, earned grades, considered ideas, and achieved dreams they thought impossible before HMI.
Most of all, I love being part of a school where I admire our students. They are part of a community of like-minded risk takers, intellectually curious learners, and life-long adventurers.
These students often call HMI’s unique combination of academics, wilderness, and life in an community of shared responsibility the defining experience of their lives.
It can be hard to go away. The rewards, however, are immense. If you are interested in exploring the potential to be found in yourself and the world around you, I urge you to examine which HMI program is right for you.
I hope to see you soon.
